The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, affirmed yesterday, Monday, in Tipasa that all conditions are met for the export of green energy and that Algeria possesses a surplus in this area.
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of a working visit to the wilaya of Tipasa province, the minister indicated that Algeria has a "surplus in green energy production" and that "conditions are favorable for its export."
After highlighting that the Sonelgaz group is working on electricity export projects and performance improvements, the minister mentioned the "major project" between Algeria and Italy regarding the construction of an electrical interconnection between the two countries.
Mr. Adjal also revealed that his department is preparing to receive, during this January, two photovoltaic power plant projects in the provinces of El Meghaier (Tendla) and Biskra (El Ghrous). These plants have a production capacity of nearly 200 megawatts and are part of a project to produce 3,200 megawatts across 22 power plants, with capacities ranging between 80 and 220 megawatts.
He stated that this project constitutes the first phase of the national renewable energy program, aiming to commission 15,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2035. This is in implementation of the program of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who "attaches extreme importance and absolute priority to renewable energies," he affirmed.
The minister added that the delivery, scheduled for next June, of a 1,100-megawatt renewable energy project, followed by the completion of the 3,200-megawatt program before the end of the current year, will allow Algeria to strengthen its energy security and eventually position itself as a green energy exporter.
The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies reaffirmed his department's vision regarding the development and use of new and renewable energies. This is part of a strategy aiming to "promote energy transition and establish sustainable development through the diversification of energy sources, particularly by resorting to solar, wind, and hydraulic energy, in addition to launching studies related to green hydrogen and strengthening electricity supply to isolated areas using renewable energies."
While laying the foundation stone for a 60/220 kilovolt high-voltage electrical substation project in Sidi Ghilès, accompanied by the Wali of Tipasa, Mohamed Amine Benchaoulia, the minister emphasized that this project aims to boost the wilaya's agricultural and tourism capacities through considerable electricity production. This serves to ensure the energy future of the wilaya of Tipasa, which currently boasts a 99% electricity coverage rate and an 88% gas network connection rate.
Costing 6.714 billion DA, this strategic project is set to enter service in 2028 as part of the "Sonelgaz Horizons 2030" program.
The electricity transmission network in the wilaya of Tipasa includes 11 transformer stations with an estimated total capacity of 1,170 mega-volt-amperes (MVA), according to explanations provided on-site.
Furthermore, the minister indicated that the government is constantly working to improve the quality of public services in the electricity sector by granting open financial envelopes intended for strengthening the network and addressing problems related to pressure drops or voltage weakness, among other issues.
Concluding his visit, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies held a meeting with local authorities to listen to the concerns of elected officials and local leaders regarding his sector, issuing directives aimed at improving energy-related services.
On this occasion, he recalled the decision to open Sonelgaz group commercial agencies in all daïras of the country to improve services, satisfy citizen requests, and address their concerns more effectively, highlighting that the wilaya of Tipasa is slated for three new agencies.
