In a historic speech delivered before the delegations gathered at the esplanade of the Mémorial du Martyr (Sanctuary of Martyrs) in algiers, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV praised Algeria as a "noble country, endowed with an ancient history and rich traditions dating back to the era of Saint-Augustin, and long before."
He added that "Algeria's history has known pain and has traversed periods of violence, but you have known how to overcome all of this with honor and courage."
During his address, the Sovereign Pontiff emphasized that "on this land, a meeting point of cultures and religions, mutual respect is the path that allows peoples to walk together."
He expressed his hope that "Algeria, strengthened by its roots and the hope of its youth, will remain capable of continuing to contribute to the consolidation of stability and the strengthening of dialogue within the international community and across both shores of the Mediterranean."
