Telecommunications: Algeria and Tunisia Agree on Nine Practical Projects

The visit of the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Mr. Sid Ali Zerrouki, to Tunisia concluded with a significant set of outcomes, following a working visit accompanied by senior officials, experts, and representatives of institutions from the postal and telecommunications sector.

The visit was marked by the convening of the fourth session of the Algeria–Tunisia Joint Technical Committee for Cooperation, co-chaired by Minister Sid Ali Zerrouki and his Tunisian counterpart, Mr. Sofiene Hemissi, Minister of Communication Technologies.

The session was held in implementation of the bilateral agreement on cooperation in postal services and information and communication technologies, with a focus on intensifying coordination, exchanging expertise, and supporting joint cooperation projects, particularly those aimed at developing border regions and reducing the digital divide.

The work of the session was organized into five sectoral working groups covering: telecommunications infrastructure and information technologies; spectrum management; cooperation between Algérie Poste and Tunisian Post; technology hubs and entrepreneurship; and prospects for expanding bilateral cooperation.

The session concluded with a set of priority projects and recommendations, most notably:

  • The two sides agreed to develop and upgrade the existing terrestrial link between the two countries and study the possibility of deploying a new shared submarine cable toward Italy.
  • Agreement to explore mechanisms for preferential mobile roaming tariffs and to develop IoT solutions based on satellite technology.
  • Establishment of a joint working group to coordinate mobile networks and reduce radio interference in border areas.
  • Strengthening coordination in preparation for the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) 2027.
  • Launch of joint stamp programs to promote the historical, cultural, and tourist heritage of both countries.
  • Development of postal transit infrastructure to support e-commerce.
  • Establishment of an electronic data exchange system and a shared postal money transfer mechanism.
  • In the field of technology hubs and entrepreneurship, implementation of practical initiatives including institutional twinning, support for startups, and incubation and acceleration programs.
  • Strengthening cooperation in research, development, and innovation within international programs.

Minister Zerrouki reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to continuing and expanding bilateral cooperation, stressing that these steps seek to deepen integration between the two countries and open promising prospects for partnership in the service of shared interests and the aspirations of both brotherly peoples.
