Today, Tuesday, the President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), and former UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, spoke at a diplomatic event hosted by the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf at the ministry headquarters.
The former UN Secretary-General highly commended Algeria's strategic role and commitment to climate action, welcoming its official accession as the 52nd Member State of the GGGI, and highlighted that Algeria's membership opens a new chapter in international partnership to advance sustainable development.
A New Chapter in Strategic Partnership
Mr. Ban Ki-moon emphasized that Algeria is uniquely positioned to drive the transition toward a green economy, stating:
"Algeria is uniquely positioned to contribute to this transformation, with its strategic location, renewable energy potential, industrial capabilities, and leadership role in the region providing a strong foundation for advancing green growth."
He added that Algeria’s vision for economic diversification and sustainable development aligns closely with the global green transition. Through this partnership, the GGGI aims to support Algeria's national priorities, build strong capacities with government institutions, and help unlock long-term development opportunities.
Overcoming the Implementation Gap
Addressing the global sustainability crisis, the GGGI President noted that the transition to green growth—an economy that is environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive—presents one of the greatest economic opportunities of our time, particularly for Africa.
He explained that while many governments set ambitious climate commitments, turning them into reality remains a challenge. "One of the greatest barriers to climate action has been the gap between ambition and implementation," he said, stressing that GGGI will bridge this gap in Algeria by providing technical expertise, institutional capacity, and mobilizing green investments.
Algeria as a Diplomatic Bridge for Climate Action
Expressing concern over current geopolitical tensions that disrupt global cooperation and divert crucial resources away from the climate crisis, Mr. Ban Ki-moon called for stronger international solidarity and South-South cooperation.
He concluded by highlighting Algeria’s pivotal diplomatic influence to champion this cause:
"As a respected diplomatic actor, a bridge between Africa, the Arab world, and the Mediterranean, and a champion of South-South cooperation, Algeria is in a strategic position to advance dialogue and collective action on climate issues and sustainable development."
