A central official at the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies confirmed that a meeting regarding the Southern Hydrogen Corridor "SoutH2 Corridor" will be held soon.
M. Khalil Hedna, Director of Communication at the aforementioned ministry, stated that Algeria will host the meeting in the coming months.
The project aims to transport green hydrogen produced in Algeria to European countries.
The meeting will bring together Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Austria, and Germany to coordinate the steps necessary to implement the project.
Observers believe that the corridor project will enhance the energy transition in the region and affirm Algeria's pivotal position in the energy arena.
This project is in addition to the maritime line for exporting Algerian "decarbonized" electrical energy to Italy.
Hedna noted that the studies related to this project, managed by Sonelgaz, Sonatrach, and the Italian company Eni, are proceeding at an "accelerated" pace.
Previously, on February 5, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, had proposed organizing a meeting in Algeria regarding the project.
During his meeting with the Italian Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Adjal suggested gathering the countries involved in the project.
Adjal emphasized the necessity of working to accelerate the pace of completing the Southern Hydrogen Corridor facility.
Adjal also touched upon the electrical interconnection project between Algeria and Italy via a submarine cable, aimed at supplying the Italian and European markets.
Adjal stressed "the importance of this project in terms of technical-economic feasibility while respecting the win-win principle."
For his part, the Italian Minister highlighted the significant role Algeria plays as a reliable energy supplier in the Mediterranean region, particularly towards Italy.
