The Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Mr. Philip Mshelbila, began a working visit to Algeria on Saturday aimed at strengthening consultation and coordination on the latest developments in global natural gas markets and the industry's future prospects, according to a statement from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons.

During the visit, which continues until June 23, discussions will address challenges related to supply security, investment in the sector, and the energy transition, as well as fostering scientific and technical cooperation among member countries, the same source added.

The program includes a series of meetings with several Algerian officials, led by the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, to explore ways to enhance cooperation between Algeria and the Forum and develop joint initiatives in scientific research, innovation, and the exchange of expertise.

The Secretary-General will also visit the GECF Gas Research Institute (GRI), headquartered in Algiers. Inaugurated on February 29, 2024, on the sidelines of the 7th GECF Summit, the institute serves as a specialized scientific platform aimed at advancing research and innovation in natural gas and fostering collaboration between research centers, experts, and energy institutions of member countries.

Furthermore, the itinerary includes working meetings with the institute's executives and a technical visit to the Sonatrach Group’s Gas Pipeline Supervision and Control Center. This visit will allow the delegation to gain insights into Algerian expertise in managing gas infrastructure and the development of monitoring and control systems.

This visit reaffirms "Algeria's prominent position within the GECF and its active role in promoting dialogue and cooperation among member states to serve the stability of natural gas markets and enhance the contribution of these resources to sustainable socio-economic development," the statement emphasized.

The Ministry of Hydrocarbons recalled the Forum's vital role in supporting the sovereign rights of member countries over their natural gas resources and fostering dialogue between producers and consumers to ensure the security and stability of global gas markets and a balanced long-term supply and demand.
