The Collective of Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders in Western Sahara (CODESA) has announced the creation of its "Europe" branch, tasked with advocating before competent international mechanisms and bodies on issues related to respect for human rights in the occupied Sahrawi territories.

This initiative is part of "the continued defense of human rights, particularly the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, in accordance with the principles and provisions of international law and relevant UN resolutions," CODESA explained in a statement.

A constitutive general assembly "was held as part of the completion of the Collective's organizational structuring," the statement added, noting that this assembly facilitated the election of members to the governing bodies of the CODESA "Europe" branch, entrusting Sahrawi activist Deich Daff with the position of Secretary General.

The assembly was marked by an in-depth debate on actions to be taken to strengthen the struggle for respect for human rights in occupied Western Sahara at the European level.

It also provided an opportunity to discuss ways and means to reinforce mechanisms for monitoring, documentation, and international advocacy regarding grave human rights violations in the occupied Sahrawi territories.

On this occasion, the CODESA "Europe" branch affirmed its "firm commitment" to fulfilling its mission of defending human rights, monitoring, and documenting the grave violations committed by the Moroccan occupier against Sahrawi civilians in the occupied part of Western Sahara, and to advocating on these matters before competent international bodies.
