The Polisario Front reaffirmed on Tuesday, through its Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Coordinator with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Sidi Mohamed Omar, that the Sahrawi people "will never accept" the colonial fait accompli policy imposed by Morocco and will continue their resistance and legitimate struggle to defend their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

Mr. Sidi Mohamed Omar was speaking during the proceedings of the thematic session of the Special Committee on Decolonization (Committee of 24), which began on Monday at the UN headquarters in New York. The Committee of 24 is one of the main UN mechanisms tasked with monitoring the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.

On this occasion, the Sahrawi diplomat emphasized that the Polisario Front "will remain fully committed to the establishment of a just and lasting peace and will continue to contribute constructively to the completion of the decolonization process in Western Sahara," assuring that "the Sahrawi people will never accept the Moroccan policy of a colonial fait accompli."

"The way forward to complete the decolonization process in Western Sahara is perfectly clear: to allow the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence within the framework of a free and democratic process," he insisted, recalling that "the right of the Sahrawi people to freely determine their political future is an inalienable and non-negotiable right."

"The Polisario Front is the sole and legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council," he continued, recalling that "63 years ago, this Committee placed Western Sahara on its agenda, thereby recognizing the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence, in accordance with General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV), which constitutes the very essence and foundation of this Committee's mission."

Mr. Sidi Mohamed Omar also reminded the committee that "the Sahrawi people have been waiting for more than six decades for the UN to fully assume its responsibility in completing the decolonization process in Western Sahara."
