Algeria has renewed, through its Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Mr. Idriss Latreche, its firm commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights. The country continues to achieve qualitative gains within the framework of embodying the reformist approach initiated by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
In his speech during the interactive dialogue on the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ambassador Latreche affirmed Algeria's support for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the execution of its mandate. He pointed out that this reformist approach adopts a balance and interconnectedness among all rights, be they political, economic, social, or cultural.
The Permanent Representative of Algeria added that this approach "finds its echo today in the ongoing reform initiatives, development projects, and social programs taking place in Algeria, as well as in the democratic process that continues to be strengthened, as Algeria prepares to organize legislative elections next month."
On the external front, Ambassador Latreche stated that Algeria drew the OHCHR's attention to the situation in Western Sahara in light of the recent opinion of the Committee Against Torture. Algeria called on the Office to organize its long-awaited field visit and to support direct negotiations between the two parties to the conflict—the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front—in order to enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.
In the same context, the Permanent Representative emphasized the importance of documenting the crimes to which the Palestinian people have been and continue to be subjected. He called for redoubling efforts to enable this proud people to recover all of their usurped rights.
