Algerian screenwriter and director Anis Djaad passed away on Wednesday evening at the age of 52, following a long battle with illness, according to his loved ones.

Born in Algiers in 1974, Anis Djaad, a former journalist, grew up in the Bab El Oued neighborhood. He made his cinematic debut as a screenwriter, then as an assistant director, before moving on to direct short films based on his own scripts.

Alongside his film career, the late filmmaker was also an author, with several novels to his name, including "L’odeur du violon" (2009).

He wrote the screenplays for "Au bout du tunnel," "H3O," "Les Assoiffés," and "Le hublot." He also directed the latter, which won the Best Short Film Screenplay award at the Algiers Cinematographic Days in 2011.

Djaad quickly stepped behind the camera to direct several short and feature films, including "Passage à niveau" (2014), "Le voyage de Keltoum" (2016), "La vie d’après" (2021), and "The Night of Abed" (2023).

His films were recognized with numerous other awards. Notably, his feature film "La vie d’après" earned, among other honors, the African Critics' Award at the 33rd Carthage Film Festival in Tunisia and the "Golden Kholkhal" Audience Award at the National Festival of Women's Literature and Cinema in Saïda.
