The visit that the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, Ms. Giorgia Meloni, began today, Wednesday, to Algeria constitutes a new milestone in the process of strengthening the strategic partnership uniting the two friendly countries. It serves as an opportunity to renew their strong will to push bilateral cooperation relations towards broader horizons.

Upon her arrival at Houari Boumediene International Airport, Ms. Meloni was received by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb.

This visit comes to confirm, once again, the remarkable dynamic that the deeply rooted relations between the two countries have witnessed in recent years. This is translated by mutual official visits and intense contacts between the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and his Italian counterpart, Mr. Sergio Mattarella. It embodies their determination to give a strong impetus to these ties and enhance bilateral strategic dialogue and cooperation, for the benefit of the two friendly peoples, based on the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Good Neighborliness that binds them.

Proceeding from this, Ms. Meloni's visit to Algeria represents an opportunity to evaluate the results of the joint strategic agreements and projects established by the two countries. It will also explore new partnership opportunities across several sectors, in addition to laying the groundwork for the Algerian-Italian Chamber of Commerce.

In this context, the President of the Republic paid an official visit to Italy last July. During this visit, he co-chaired, alongside the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, the fifth session of the high-level Algerian-Italian intergovernmental summit. This culminated in the signing of several partnership agreements and memorandums of understanding covering various fields, such as agriculture, fisheries, investment, energy, and film production, as well as relief, firefighting, and counter-terrorism, in addition to a joint declaration in the field of defense.

The President of the Republic considered this visit a "prominent milestone in the context of continuous work and coordination to strengthen and expand the partnership between the two friendly countries." He expressed his certainty that what has been achieved "opens broad horizons for the strategic and exemplary Algerian-Italian partnership, truly reflecting the depth of the long-standing relations and the deeply rooted bonds of friendship between the two countries."

Prior to that, the President of the Republic had also paid a state visit to Italy in May 2022, which allowed for the consolidation of the excellent relations between the two countries and the signing of numerous important cooperation agreements.

At the invitation of Ms. Meloni, the President of the Republic participated in the G7 summit of the world's leading industrialized nations in June 2024, held in the Italian city of Bari.

For his part, President Sergio Mattarella paid a state visit to Algeria in November 2021, which enabled the expansion of the scope of cooperation between the two countries through the signing of three important agreements in the fields of justice, education, and culture.

The President of the Republic and his Italian counterpart are keen, on all occasions and during their contacts, to emphasize the great convergence of views between the two countries regarding various international and regional issues of common interest.

From this perspective, the President of the Republic affirmed in his speech to the participants of the 2nd Africa-Italy Summit, held last February in Addis Ababa, that "the Algerian-Italian experience, spanning decades, today constitutes a practical pillar for the (Mattei) Plan, as it confirms that the availability of political will and mutual trust allows for achieving the desired results in a way that serves the interests of both peoples and contributes to enhancing regional stability."

In January 2023, the President of the Italian Council of Ministers visited Algeria, which culminated in the signing of a joint declaration on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness, and Cooperation. This was in addition to four memorandums of understanding and cooperation covering the sectors of energy, technology, and space activities for peaceful purposes, as well as cooperation between the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA) and the General Confederation of Italian Industry (Confindustria).

Within the framework of the intensive mutual visits between the two countries, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People's National Army, Army General Saïd Chanegriha, paid a visit to Italy in 2024. During this visit, praise was directed at "the excellent level of military cooperation between the two friendly countries, which reflects the high level of understanding and great trust that characterizes Algerian-Italian relations."
