The magazine emphasized that his passing was a moment of loyalty and remembrance for a man who dedicated his life to serving Algeria, contributing with wisdom and competence to safeguarding its unity and strengthening its stability during the darkest of times.
The editorial of El Djeich Magazine stated: “On March 28, 2026, Algeria bid farewell to one of its exceptional and loyal sons, the Mujahid and former President, the late Liamine Zeroual, in a solemn funeral attended by the President of the Republic, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and Minister of National Defense, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, along with senior state officials, a group of his companions in the struggle, and a massive crowd of citizens who flocked from all corners of the country to bid farewell to this righteous and devoted patriot. He passed away at the age of 85, a life he dedicated entirely to Algeria and exhausted in the service of the nation. Having been imbued from an early age with the values of patriotism, sacrifice, and selflessness, he joined the blessed Liberation Revolution as a Mujahid in the ranks of the National Liberation Army at the age of barely 16, fighting the hateful occupier and striving for liberation from the shackles of slavery. He continued his struggle after the recovery of national sovereignty as an officer in the ranks of the People's National Army, fulfilling his duty completely and holding the highest positions: Minister of National Defense after serving as an Ambassador, then Head of State, and subsequently elected President of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria after being endorsed by the Algerian people to lead our country through its darkest periods. He managed it with wisdom, foresight, and skill, contributing immensely to extinguishing the strife and returning our country to its correct path after it was on the verge of collapse”.
El Djeich Magazine added: “It is a long and illustrious journey, during which the deceased left a profound impact and eternal footprints, rich in sublime values and noble qualities. He was the truthful, simple, and humble man—simultaneously firm and clement—who never hesitated to answer the nation's call whenever it was in need. His lifelong preoccupation was the preservation of Algeria's unity and the consolidation of its security and stability, anchored by its ambitious youth and guided by the sacrifices of our glorious ancestors.
Undoubtedly, the late leader's valuable legacy and glorious biography serve as a beacon to be followed, out of loyalty to all of Algeria's honorable men who served the nation with sincerity, integrity, and devotion. They never hesitated nor faltered when they heard the nation's call, making the greatest sacrifices and always placing Algeria's interest as their highest consideration and noblest goal, firmly believing in the weight and sanctity of the trust. This was highlighted by the President of the Republic when speaking of the deceased's qualities, saying: “'I hold a special affection for Mr. Liamine; when you speak to him, you are speaking to a pure Algerian. He is an honest and patriotic person who never deceived at any stage, and I testify that he has great compassion for simple people”.
These are the values that every Algerian, jealous for their nation, must embody and adopt as a guiding methodology and a beacon to follow. This is essential to safeguard the legacy of our illustrious ancestors and to preserve Algeria's security and stability, particularly within an international and regional context characterized by turbulence, volatility, and instability.
Undoubtedly, this sensitive phase requires, more than ever, a solid national unity and a strong, harmonious, and cohesive internal front, with all living national forces rallying around the supreme interest of the country. It is a phase in which all honorable Algerians continue to fulfill their solemn national responsibilities, including the personnel of the People's National Army. They persist in performing their noble missions with determination, dedication, and competence, inheriting the sublime values of their ancestors’ generation after generation. Walking their righteous path and embodying the traits of loyalty and self-sacrifice, they move forward with unyielding resolve to strengthen the pillars of security and stability, consolidate the tranquility our country enjoys, and safeguard national sovereignty and territorial and popular unity regardless of the circumstances. This was reaffirmed by General of the Army Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People's National Army, who stated: “I remain fully confident that you will continue, as always, to be worthy of the trust placed in you by your people and leadership, achieving the best field results and realizing the set objectives aimed at ensuring the nation's security and stability. You will continue to support the sincere developmental efforts exerted day and night for the prosperity and growth of the New, Victorious Algeria, laying the foundations for its promising future and bright tomorrow, guided by the values of the glorious November Revolution and the sacrifices of our righteous martyrs and noble Mujahideen”.
In conclusion, Algeria will forever remain a cradle for loyal men of high ambition and strong resolve. Thanks to the awareness of its people, it will remain powerful and steadfast, as it has been throughout its long journey deep in history, providing an exquisite model of unity and cohesion. Algeria continues to build its edifice, looking forward with determination and labor toward further development and progress, paving the way for its victorious national journey toward a new, victorious Algeria, secure in its present and optimistic about its future. It mobilizes all its capabilities to strengthen its standing among nations, in a manner befitting its rich historical legacy, eternal glory, and proud people.
