The President of the Constitutional Court, Mrs. Leila Aslaoui, highlighted today, Tuesday, in Algiers, the qualitative shift witnessed by the Algerian constitutional system, which reflects a “relentless pursuit toward establishing judicial oversight in accordance with international standards.”

Mrs. Aslaoui explained, while presiding over the opening of the 3rd International Forum on “The Role of Constitutional Oversight in Protecting Rights and Freedoms in Algeria and Comparative Systems,” organized at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center, that “the qualitative shift witnessed by the Algerian constitutional system reflects a relentless pursuit toward establishing judicial oversight in accordance with international standards.” It also reflects the role of constitutional justice as “an impregnable fortress where rights and freedoms are preserved.”

In this context, she emphasized that establishing the tradition of holding an annual international forum for the Constitutional Court “is not merely an organizational measure, but rather a manifestation of the commitment to making constitutional justice the fundamental pillar for protecting the legal status of the citizen,” while stressing “the importance of scientific sobriety in addressing constitutional matters.”

On this occasion, Mrs. Aslaoui recalled the “resounding success” of the 2nd International Forum, highlighting that its outcomes “confirmed the necessity of enhancing citizen access to the constitutional judge.” For her part, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Algeria, Mrs. Natasha van Rijn, considered that organizing this international meeting in partnership with the Constitutional Court, and under the high patronage of the President of the Republic of Algeria, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, reflects a “high-quality strategic partnership' between the two sides.”

She pointed out that the forum's theme “lies at the heart of the foundations of every democratic society,” considering that constitutional justice represents “a fundamental guarantee for the supremacy of the Constitution and a pivotal mechanism for achieving the balance of powers.” She also commended Algeria's efforts in “strengthening its legal and institutional framework.”

For his part, the member of the Constitutional Court, Mr. Amar Boudiaf, explained that constitutional justice has become “one of the pillars of human rights guarantees against any infringement on constitutionally protected rights and freedoms.” He pointed out that these rights in Algeria, following the 2020 amendment, have witnessed “a broad evolution in terms of both establishment and substance.”
