Algerian associations have been granted international accreditation by UNESCO during the 11th session of the General Assembly of States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held on June 17–18 in Paris. Fifty‑nine new non‑governmental organizations were accredited to provide advisory services to the International Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, according to a Ministry of Culture and Arts statement.
Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda, congratulated the five newly accredited associations: "Imkras pour le Patrimoine et le Folklore" (M'zab Valley, Ghardaïa), "Biskra Reads" (Biskra), the "Medieval Béjaïa Mathematics History Research Group" (Béjaïa), the "Mouahidia Association for the Protection of Historical, Cultural, and Tourism Heritage" (Nedroma, Tlemcen), and the national association "Our Algeria Heritage".
According to the minister, their accession to the "global elite list of 59 NGOs" highlights the quality of the work these associations have accomplished and demonstrates the pioneering role of Algerian civil society, its capacity to protect collective memory and to represent it capably in international forums. It also testifies to Algeria’s commitment to safeguarding its scientific heritage and protecting its authentic legacy.
The 11th General Assembly, which brought together 185 member states, also debated several issues linked to heritage protection worldwide, the future of the Convention, and related matters.
