Nasri Participates in the Closing of the Conference on Reparatory Justice and Reparations Relating to the Transatlantic Slave Trade

Representing the President of the Republic of Algeria, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Azouz Nasri, Representing the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Azzouz Nacereddine, participated on Friday in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, in the closing events of the High-Level Consultative Conference on Reparatory Justice and Historical Reparations Relating to the Transatlantic Slave Trade, according to a statement issued this Saturday by the Council.

As highlighted by the source, the closing activities included several consultative sessions addressing the core axes of the conference, particularly "issues of reparatory justice and historical reparations, the restitution of looted cultural heritage, and the legal and institutional frameworks capable of ensuring equity and redress," as well as exploring mechanisms for implementation and follow-up.

The proceedings culminated in the adoption of the conference's final document and the post-resolution global framework, reflecting the shared will of the participating countries to advance the path of historical justice and preserve the collective memory of affected peoples.

Following the conclusion of the conference proceedings, Nasri, along with senior officials from participating countries and organizations, attended a traditional ceremony hosted at the historic Osu Castle. The castle stands as "one of the most prominent witnesses to the transatlantic slave trade and the humanitarian tragedies and intergenerational impacts it left behind." The occasion also served as an opportunity to honor the memory of the millions who were forcibly taken from the African continent.

Furthermore, emphasis was placed on the historical and humanitarian ties linking them to the peoples of Africa, in a symbolic message calling for the consolidation of the values of justice, dignity, and reconciliation.

The source added that the occasion also marked the commemoration of "Juneteenth," which symbolizes the final liberation of enslaved African Americans. In this regard, emphasis was placed on the importance of preserving historical memory and strengthening international efforts aimed at combating all forms of discrimination and racism, as well as building a future based on equity, the recognition of rights, and justice among peoples.

On the sidelines of the conference, a traditional ceremony was held during which several senior officials and participating figures were honored, including the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, in a symbolic gesture reflecting the spirit of friendship and mutual appreciation among peoples, and embodying the cultural and humanitarian dimensions that characterized this international gathering.
