The United Nations Security Council is holding an open briefing this Monday, followed by closed consultations, to discuss the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories under the agenda item "The Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question."
During the session, Ramiz Alakbarov, the Deputy Special Coordinator and Resident Coordinator in the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, alongside two representatives from civil society, are expected to provide briefings on the matter.
In his briefing, Ramiz Alakbarov will address the latest quarterly report of the UN Secretary-General (covering the period from March 14 to June 12) regarding the implementation of Resolution 2334, adopted on December 23, 2016. This resolution demands that the Zionist occupation cease all settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, and calls for immediate steps to prevent violence against civilians, including acts of terrorism.
The UN official is also expected to focus on the situation in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, where the Secretary-General’s report noted that violence continues at an "alarming rate." The report documented the martyrdom of 37 Palestinians, including ten children and two women, at the hands of occupation forces and settlers during the period covered.
Furthermore, Ramiz Alakbarov is anticipated to address the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, which the report describes as "dire," alongside the ongoing Zionist aggression in clear violation of the ceasefire agreement. He may also highlight humanitarian efforts that remain severely restricted due to the limited number of operational crossings and continued Zionist constraints. The UN report underscores the rapid damage and needs assessment for Gaza, identifying reconstruction and recovery needs at approximately $71.4 billion over the next decade, noting that the Strip’s economy has contracted by 84% as a result of the Zionist aggression.
