During a work visit to Copenhagen, Denmark, the Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Mr. Wassim Kouidri, discussed a project to establish a regional center in Algeria to supply African countries with locally produced essential medicines, within the framework of enhancing health security on the continent and developing cooperation with international partners, according to a statement from the Ministry this Wednesday.

The statement explained that the visit, running from July 6 to 9, comes as part of a technical mission to the Supply Division of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and serves to implement the outcomes of the African Ministerial Conference on Local Production of Medicines and Health Technologies, which was hosted by Algeria in November 2025.

The same source added that the delegation accompanying the Minister included the UNICEF Representative in Algeria, Katarina Johansson, the Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Algeria, Phanuel Habimana, along with the Representative of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) office in Algeria, Hassiba Sayah, as well as the Ambassador of Algeria to Denmark, Mohamed Ainseur.

During the visit, the Minister reviewed with international partners, particularly the WHO and UNICEF, the cooperation mechanisms capable of establishing an effective and sustainable system to supply African nations with locally manufactured essential medicines, thereby contributing to the strengthening of regional supply chains and raising the readiness of continental health systems to face various challenges.

The statement noted that the project to establish the regional center reflects the advancement achieved by the Algerian pharmaceutical industry and reinforces Algeria's position as a regional hub for medicine production in Africa, especially given that it hosts nearly one-third of the pharmaceutical manufacturing enterprises on the continent.
