The participants in the International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa, held in Algiers, proposed the establishment of a commission dedicated to “historical truth” and the conduct of a continent-wide audit of the economic repercussions of colonialism, according to the contents of the “Algeria's Declaration” issued at the conclusion of this continental meeting.

The Declaration states the “importance of conducting a continent-wide audit of the economic impacts of colonialism in order to develop a justice-based reparations strategy that includes, among other measures, compensation for plundered resources, debt cancellation, and equitable development financing.”

The text adds: “We support the establishment of an African Commission for Memory and Historical Truth tasked with harmonizing historical curricula, overseeing the collection of archives, coordinating African research centers, and preparing analyses and recommendations for the continent.”

Furthermore, The Declaration of Algeria emphasizes “the urgent need to reform African educational systems to fully integrate pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial history, and to support younger generations in developing an informed historical consciousness.”

The participants also recommended “the creation of African digital archives, the redefinition of educational curricula, and the establishment of memorials, museums, and commemorative days.”
