Ambassador Mohammed Khaled, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the African Union and head of the delegation participating in the 7th Conference of States Parties to the Pelindaba Treaty, reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to strengthening nuclear security and sustainable development in Africa. The conference opened this Thursday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis-Abeba.
Speaking during the proceedings held under the auspices of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE), Mr. Khaled emphasized Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the goals and principles of the Pelindaba Treaty. He highlighted Algeria's dedication to supporting African efforts aimed at nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament, and the consolidation of a culture of nuclear safety and security. Furthermore, he stressed the need to expand the benefits of peaceful applications of nuclear technology in fields such as healthcare, agriculture, water resource management, and energy production.
In this context, the Ambassador noted that peaceful nuclear applications serve as effective tools for achieving socio-economic development and addressing the developmental challenges facing African nations. He also underscored the importance of safeguarding the sovereign right of states to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, contributing to regional and international peace, security, and stability.
Mr. Khaled reviewed Algeria’s national efforts in nuclear security and oversight, notably the recent establishment of the National Authority for Nuclear Safety and Security (Autorité Nationale de Sûreté et de Sécurité Nucléaires). This body is tasked with oversight and implementing non-proliferation safeguards. He also highlighted Algeria's contribution within the framework of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (TICE), through the National Data Center of the Algerian Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA), which has also been designated as a regional cooperation center for nuclear safeguards by AFCONE.
The 7th Conference of States Parties to the Pelindaba Treaty is taking place on June 25 and 26, with the participation of member states and regional and international partners. The Algerian delegation, led by Ambassador Mohammed Khaled, includes representatives from the Ministry of National Defense, the National Authority for Nuclear Safety and Security, and COMENA.
The conference sessions are focused on reviewing AFCONE’s work program for the 2026-2028 period, aimed at reinforcing the implementation of the Pelindaba Treaty and solidifying Africa’s status as a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone, while supporting the peaceful use of nuclear energy for the continent’s sustainable development. The conference is also expected to elect new members to the African Commission on Nuclear Energy.
