The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on Monday evening by an overwhelming majority, reaffirming the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people over their natural resources.

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, 156 countries voted in favor of the resolution titled: "Permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources."

The resolution affirms a set of legal principles and foundations regarding Palestinian natural resources, including the applicability of the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, in addition to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

The text also refers to the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on July 19, 2024, regarding the legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of the Zionist entity in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the illegality of its continued presence there, in addition to recalling the ICJ's advisory opinion regarding the separation wall.

The resolution affirms the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people over their natural resources, calls on the Zionist entity to cease exploiting these resources, and underscores the right of the Palestinian people to demand compensation for this exploitation.

It also highlights that the construction of settlements and the wall by the Zionist entity, along with other practices, are detrimental to the Palestinian environment.

The Permanent Representative of the State of Palestine to the UN, Riyad Mansour, expressed his gratitude on this occasion to the countries that voted for the resolution and welcomed the growing sympathy of the international community, particularly in light of the Zionist genocidal aggression launched against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, in addition to its aggression in the occupied West Bank, stressing the need to compel the Zionist entity to implement this resolution.
