On Tuesday in Algiers, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb reiterated that Algeria places special importance on its diaspora abroad, highlighting that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune considers the diaspora to be at the heart of his concerns. He emphasized that the recent appeal to young Algerians abroad, particularly those in vulnerable and illegal situations, serves as an additional indication of the government's constant commitment to protecting Algerians wherever they are.
This came in a speech delivered by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb while overseeing, under the directive of the President of the Republic, the opening of the Heads of Consular Posts Conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He emphasized that the convening of this conference, after more than 20 years since its first edition, has become a necessity driven by the importance of reviewing the achievements made for the benefit of the national diaspora and adapting the measures and procedures designated for this group.
Mr. Sifi Ghrieb explained that Algeria has constitutionally enshrined the special status it accords to its national diaspora abroad, by explicitly stating the State's role in protecting citizens abroad and their interests, preserving their identity and dignity, strengthening their ties with the nation, and mobilizing their contribution to the development of their country of origin.
He added that this "approach, based on considering the national diaspora abroad as an integral part of the nation, reflects the importance that the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, attaches to our community abroad, which he places at the heart of his concerns. This prompts us to reaffirm this orientation and to exercise the necessary diligence to materialize this insightful vision."
In this context, he considered that the tasks undertaken by Consuls General and Consuls are of "paramount importance, given their close link to fulfilling the President of the Republic's commitment to protecting our nationals abroad and encouraging their active contribution to the national renewal process."
He noted that one of the most prominent manifestations of the President's commitment to protecting the diaspora was the inclusion of the 'National Diaspora Abroad' dimension within the official designation of the Foreign Affairs sector and the appointment of a Secretary of State for the National Diaspora Abroad. This serves as an explicit indication of dedicating a portion of government activity to serving the community in the diaspora.
On this occasion, the Prime Minister highlighted the recent appeal made by the President of the Republic to young Algerians abroad who are in vulnerable and illegal situations. He considered this appeal to be "additional evidence of this constant commitment to protecting the children of Algeria, through the decision to regularize the status of these Algerian men and women."
He added that this decision requires the Heads of Consular Posts to "exercise the necessary diligence to follow up on its implementation, in a manner that reflects the importance attached by the country's higher authorities to consolidating the principle of protecting our citizens, of all categories, under all circumstances, and wherever they may be."
The Prime Minister also highlighted "the State’s full commitment to providing optimal care for the national diaspora residing abroad, protecting them, and constantly listening to their concerns." He noted that achieving this goal requires "continuing to support the role of our diplomatic and consular network in developing its work methods, in order to fulfill the tasks entrusted to it toward this important segment of Algerian society."
