The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Health, Mr. Mohamed Talhi, received a delegation from the African Union Commission led by the Head of the Health Division, Mr. Adamu Isah, according to a ministry statement released on Tuesday.

The same source explained that Mr. Adamu Isah opened the meeting, which took place on Monday evening at the Ministry's headquarters, by "offering his deepest condolences and most sincere expressions of sympathy on the passing of former President of the Republic Liamine Zéroual, praying for his pure soul."

During the meeting, which was attended by central administration executives, he also praised "the advanced level achieved by the healthcare system in Algeria, and its qualitative and tangible development. This is particularly evident in healthcare services and pharmaceutical production, which have made a significant leap reflecting the dynamics of reform and growing Algerian capabilities in this vital sector."

In the same context, he expressed his "appreciation for Algeria's significant efforts in supporting and developing the pharmaceutical industry," emphasizing "the strategic importance of boosting pharmaceutical production at the African level and working to establish the foundations of pharmaceutical self-sufficiency, thereby contributing to the continent's health security."

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Health welcomed the visit, considering it "an important step toward strengthening and consolidating cooperative relations with the African Union Commission."

Mr. Talhi also commended "the trust placed in Algeria by the Commission in the healthcare field," highlighting at the same time that Algeria "is a strategic destination for healthcare services and the pharmaceutical industry at the African level."

He further emphasized "the remarkable development of the national healthcare system and its growing capacity to provide high-level healthcare services, as well as the available capabilities in medical care and pharmaceutical production, which bolsters Algeria's position as an active partner at the continental level."

The meeting also provided an opportunity for "fruitful discussions" between the two sides. They explored "ways to enhance joint cooperation, particularly regarding the possibility of African Union staff benefiting from medical services in Algeria, in addition to studying the potential for concluding treatment agreements with public and private healthcare institutions." Both parties underscored "the importance of maintaining ongoing coordination and consultation to serve the Commission's interests and contribute to the development of the healthcare system at the continental level," the statement concluded.
