Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, held talks Monday in Algiers with the Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Mohamed Ould Khaled, on ways to enhance cooperation in the hydrocarbons sector, particularly by supporting exploration and production projects in Mauritania, according to a ministry statement.
These talks took place during Mr. Ould Khaled's working visit to Algeria as part of a high-level ministerial delegation led by the Mauritanian Prime Minister, Mr. Mokhtar Ould Djay, on the occasion of the 20th session of the Algerian-Mauritanian High Joint Commission for Cooperation.
Held within the framework of the renewed dynamic in relations between Algeria and Mauritania, these discussions implement the directives of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at consolidating African partnerships and enhancing South-South cooperation. The meeting was attended by the Secretary of State to the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines in charge of Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, and the CEO of the Sonatrach group, Noureddine Daoudi, alongside senior officials from both sides.
The discussions focused on enhancing hydrocarbons cooperation, notably by supporting exploration and production projects in Mauritania and expanding partnership areas across the entire value chain, from exploration to transport, processing, and marketing, the statement added.
In this regard, Mr. Arkab reaffirmed Algeria's readiness, through Sonatrach, to share its expertise and support the Mauritanian side through training programs and technical knowledge transfer, contributing to the development of the oil and gas industry in Mauritania.
Both parties also discussed ways to strengthen the presence of Algerian companies active in the hydrocarbons sector within the Mauritanian market, particularly in the marketing of petroleum products, to expand trade prospects and bolster the regional position of Algerian operators.
Furthermore, the two sides addressed prospects for expanding cooperation to areas of mutual interest, specifically the valorization and processing of resources, notably phosphates, and the development of the fertilizer industry to enhance the added value of natural resources in both countries.
In a related context, the importance of strengthening cooperation in training and capacity building was emphasized, leveraging the expertise of specialized training institutes, primarily the Algerian Petroleum Institute (IAP).
