The Council of the Nation concluded its ordinary parliamentary session (2025–2026) this Thursday morning during a plenary session chaired by the Speaker of the Council, Mr. Azouz Nasri.
The session, which took place in the presence of the Prime Minister, Mr. Sifi Ghrieb, and several members of the government, began with a minute of silence to pay tribute to the souls of the children who fell victim to the fire that broke out at dawn today at the assisted children's institution in Mohammadia, Algiers.
In his address on this occasion, Mr. Nasri emphasized that "the citizen will remain the primary goal of legislative and monitoring work, and the focus of all initiatives and reforms undertaken by state institutions," pointing out that laws "are not enacted to restrict freedoms and rights as much as they aim to expand their scope." He added that parliamentary oversight "only serves to ensure the proper implementation of public policies and to consolidate the principles of transparency, efficiency, and accountability."
On another note, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation recalled that "the sovereignty snatched by Algeria with the blood of martyrs is preserved today through the strength of institutions and the awareness of citizens." In this regard, he pointed out that "voting, in addition to being the realization of the Algerian people's right to choose their representatives in parliament, is a renewal of the pledge to the November declaration, ensuring Algeria remains sovereign in its decisions and strong through its institutions."
In this regard, he praised the "calm and civilized" atmosphere that characterized the legislative elections held on July 2, while also commending the efforts of the relevant ministries, bodies, and all security services that worked to secure this electoral event.
Mr. Nasri recalled the most important milestones that marked the concluded parliamentary session, highlighting the address delivered by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, before both chambers of Parliament at the end of last December. This address was characterized, as he emphasized, by a "clarity of vision, combining political realism with reformist ambition."
Among the prominent milestones of this legislative term was also the adoption of 14 draft laws and bills, such as the law criminalizing French colonialism in Algeria, and the adoption of the constitutional amendment aimed at "strengthening harmony between texts, updating constitutional mechanisms, and elevating the performance of institutions," the Speaker of the Council of the Nation continued.
Mr. Nasri also touched upon the most significant achievements made by Algeria during this period, highlighting its removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) monitoring list. This represented a "diplomatic and economic victory for the victorious New Algeria," reflecting its growing stature in international fora and translating the deep reforms initiated to "build an economy based on transparency and efficiency."
On the diplomatic front, Mr. Nasri praised the gains achieved by Algeria, which enabled it to "consolidate its position as a reference in defending peace and security and championing just causes, foremost of which are the Palestinian and Sahrawi causes," highlighting in this context the endorsement of Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mr. Amar Bendjama, as President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the same organization.
He also sought to commend the tireless efforts made by the members of the People's National Assembly (APN) and its former speaker, Mr. Brahim Boughali, during the concluded legislative term, as well as hailing the election of the member of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Fateh Boutbig, as President of the Pan-African Parliament for the (2026–2029) term.
Mr. Nasri concluded by emphasizing the importance of "continuing to mobilize all national energies and uniting efforts around the ambitious national project launched by the President of the Republic, which will make Algeria a rising economic power and an active player regionally and internationally."
