The President of the Republic of Algeria, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, reaffirmed this Thursday the State's commitment to exercising utmost rigor in safeguarding the rights of male and female workers, as well as retirees, and preserving their dignity. He emphasized the State's binding obligation for officials, at all levels, to ensure the tranquility of Algerian families, who entrust their daughters and sons to an environment of sustainable development in an open and productive country that values effort and considers labor a hallmark of citizenship.
In his address on International Workers' Day, celebrated annually on May 1st, the President of the Republic stated: "The female and male workers of Algeria celebrate their international day as our country has achieved significant milestones toward winning the challenge of an emerging economy, through their commitment and efforts. We have established an institutional climate that places workers as the primary engine of economic activity by investing in human resources and the national skills leading this new journey. With a spirit of commitment and challenge, these talents have overseen and efficiently executed major structural projects across vital sectors, including energy, mining, water, agriculture, startups, and entrepreneurship."
"The journey of loyalty to Algeria, its people's sacrifices, and their aspirations necessitated—initially—priorities dictated by the responsibility to rectify fragile and difficult general conditions (an economy near collapse, a restless social mood charged with suspicion, a rupture in trust, and a decline in state prestige at all levels). Today, this journey, with its growing record of strategic investments, has transcended the constraints of the beginnings. The achievements realized by our female and male workers—the Western Mining Railway, the Integrated Phosphate Project, the Zinc and Lead Project in Oued Amizour, the expanding railway network, and the completed and programmed seawater desalination plants—mark the launch of a Strong Algeria into a field of challenge. In every stage of this challenge, the nation’s cadres and workers prove their ability to raise the ceiling of ambitions."
"In this context, I recall the significant social decisions made since 2022 (the date of the first wage increase announcement) as part of a series of raises, alongside other measures to improve the conditions of broad segments of society (unemployment benefits, benefits for stay-at-home mothers, people with special needs, and students; the extension of maternity leave; and the increase of the national minimum guaranteed wage, which automatically raised the minimum pension, preceded by tax exemptions for low-income earners). As I recall these measures—whose positive impact on the standard of living is felt across the world of labor, positioning Algeria among the top providers of social security and care—I reaffirm that the State will continue to assume social transfers and support essential consumer goods. Furthermore, the Government is called upon to exercise vigilance and rigor, utilizing legal and regulatory mechanisms to combat speculation, unjustified price fluctuations, and artificial shortages that burden families, in order to preserve the social character of the State."

I proudly recall with them the struggles and sacrifices of workers and unionists, including the early pioneers led by the Martyr Aissat Idir, and those who wore Algeria as a medal of honor upon their chests, confronting the machinery of barbaric terrorism during a bloody era—among them the Martyr of National Duty, Abdelhak Benhamouda."
