The Minister of Health, Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene, received the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Algeria, Phanuel Habimana, at the ministry's headquarters. Together, they examined several files, notably bilateral cooperation for the 2026-2027 period and the national road safety strategy, a ministry statement indicated on Thursday.

During this meeting, held on Wednesday, the two officials discussed several priority files, chief among them being "the strengthening of the national road safety strategy." This aims to be achieved through the intensification of coordination and the leveraging of expertise provided by specialized UN bodies, with a view to contributing to the reduction of traffic accidents and their health, social, and economic repercussions.

The two parties also reviewed "the cooperation strategy between Algeria and the WHO for the 2026-2027 period," ensuring the alignment of cooperation programs with national priorities in the health sector. They also discussed "ways to strengthen Algeria's position as a regional hub for North Africa in the fields of health training and logistics."

In this regard, Mr. Ait Messaoudene welcomed "the leading role of the WHO in supporting states and strengthening the capacities of health systems." He reaffirmed "Algeria's will to continue joint work in the fields of prevention, public health promotion, and human resource development, as well as improving the health system's preparedness to face various challenges, serving the goals of sustainable health development."

For his part, the WHO representative praised "the level of excellence achieved by the cooperative relations between the organization and the health sector in Algeria." He affirmed that this partnership has become "a model of fruitful cooperation that calls for being elevated to higher levels through the expansion of its fields and the strengthening of coordination mechanisms."

In this context, Mr. Habimana emphasized "the importance of Algeria's participation in the proceedings of the upcoming session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa," scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa from August 25 to 28. This is due to the "pivotal role it plays in supporting health causes at the African level," as well as the capacities it possesses that qualify it to achieve further progress, "notably in the field of eradicating several diseases."
