Sahrawi Foreign Minister, Mohamed Salem Beissat, affirmed on Monday in Algiers that lasting peace and security in Africa cannot be achieved without eliminating the last remnants of colonialism.
Speaking to the Algerian Press Service (APS) on the sidelines of the 12th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, the Sahrawi minister stressed the need to complete all decolonization processes on the continent, foremost among them the Western Sahara issue.
He recalled that the latest recommendation by African heads of state and government under the “Silencing the Guns 2023” initiative called for direct negotiations between the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and the Kingdom of Morocco to establish the necessary conditions and arrangements for organizing a self-determination referendum for the people of Western Sahara.
He added: “The ‘Silencing the Guns’ recommendation, together with the African Union’s latest position, is fully aligned with the UN Security Council resolution adopted on October 31, 2025. This resolution forms the essential basis for future negotiations with the Moroccan occupying power and aims to ensure that the Sahrawi people can exercise their legitimate right to self-determination.”
