The death toll from the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the République Démocratique du Congo (DRC) has crossed the 300 mark, while the country intensifies measures to control the spread of the infection, according to the latest government statement released this Thursday.
The Ministry of Communication and Media announced that 1,155 confirmed cases of the Ebola virus have been recorded, resulting in 304 deaths. While 138 individuals have recovered, 326 others remain under treatment or in isolation.
In response to the crisis, the République Démocratique du Congo has imposed strict travel restrictions on individuals returning from areas affected by the outbreak. According to a decree signed on Wednesday by the Minister of Health, Roger Kamba, health workers, laboratory personnel, and members of response teams returning from Ebola-affected zones must undergo a strict 21-day quarantine. They are also prohibited from domestic and international travel during this period.
Furthermore, residents of any province affected by the virus will not be permitted to travel abroad until they have spent at least 21 days outside the affected zone. The decree also stipulates that all departing international travelers must complete a health declaration form issued by border health authorities, with airlines responsible for verification.
The current outbreak, officially declared in mid-May, is attributed to a surge in infections of the Bundibugyo strain. Notably, there is currently no licensed vaccine or specific treatment available to combat this particular strain of the virus.
