The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) held a meeting dedicated to examining the evolving situation in Somalia and the operations of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Discussions focused on recent political developments in the country, as well as the Mission's complex financial situation and ways to address it.
In this regard, Algeria's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Mohamed Khaled, reaffirmed Algeria's support for the stability of this brotherly nation and its constant commitment to peace efforts. He highlighted Algeria's willingness, as a member of the AU PSC, to continue supporting the Republic of Somalia in its sustained efforts to fight terrorism and consolidate peace, in coordination with regional and international partners.
The Algerian diplomat also emphasized the importance of finding consensus-based solutions to the financial difficulties facing AUSSOM. He noted that this is essential to enable the Somali government to take full control of security management. In this context, he recalled the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council to guarantee sustainable funding for the mission.
Furthermore, the African Union Commission proposed several options regarding the future of AUSSOM designed to help Somalia establish stability and peace while strengthening its institutions. These proposals will be reviewed at a later date by the countries participating in the mission and by the Military Staff Committee of the AU Peace and Security Council, before being submitted to the PSC.
The African Union Peace and Security Council is expected to issue a communiqué on this matter shortly.
