Several US pharmaceutical companies expressed, during a forum organized on Monday in Algiers, their interest in cooperating with local operators to support innovation in the health sector in Algeria.
Speakers at the high-level forum, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Algeria under the theme "Driving Innovation through Strategic Cooperation between Algeria and the United States," affirmed the readiness of US pharmaceutical companies to contribute to the development of an innovative and sustainable health system, in a context marked by the acceleration of medical technologies.
In this context, the Chargé d'Affaires at the US Embassy in Algeria, Ryan Palsrok, highlighted "the capacity of American companies to transfer advanced science and technology to Algeria, through close cooperation with professionals, institutions, and ministries, with a view to stimulating growth in the healthcare sector."
He also emphasized that "long-standing and multidimensional bilateral economic relations are experiencing development in several sectors, notably energy, agriculture, and technology," adding that this "forum will contribute to continuing this momentum and strengthening cooperation in the vital field of healthcare."
On this occasion, the American diplomat reaffirmed his country's support for initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral economic relations and encouraging innovation.
For his part, the President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Algeria, Warren Murdoch, indicated that "the holding of this forum reflects a shared ambition to strengthen the health system in Algeria through responsible, sustainable, and world-class pharmaceutical innovation."
He also stressed that "innovation is no longer just a driver of growth, but a pillar of national health resilience and an essential tool for strengthening industrial competitiveness, upon which modern health systems rely, thanks to their adaptability and the integration of scientific and technological advances."
After mentioning the profound transformation that the pharmaceutical industry is undergoing worldwide, notably through research, development supported by artificial intelligence, digital health, and smart manufacturing, the Chamber President praised "the reforms initiated by Algeria and the investments dedicated to modernizing the health system," estimating that they "offer promising foundations for accelerating scientific progress and strengthening local capacities, but also pave the way for sustainable skills development and strengthening integration into international value chains."
The Vice-President of the Chamber and director of a US laboratory in Algeria, Doria Oughlis, affirmed that the participation of US pharmaceutical firms in this forum reflects their willingness to promote joint action to accelerate effective access to innovation for patients, indicating that Algerian-American cooperation in the field of health and health innovation is "strategic," especially as it allows for the provision of innovative treatments.
During this meeting, speakers highlighted the role of pharmaceutical companies in strengthening innovation as a socio-economic value, and the means to establish a sustainable environment conducive to innovation, including the protection of patents, as well as the consolidation of national capacities in clinical research.
It should be noted that this forum was marked by the presence of representatives from several ministerial sectors, the Rector of the University of Medical Sciences, Merzak Ghernaout, the President of the Algerian Council of Economic Renewal (CREA), Kamel Moula, a representative of the General Directorate of Customs, representatives of professional organizations, and several experts and research professors.
