A conference entitled "The Martyr Mouloud Feraoun, the Conscience of Algeria Carried by the Pen" was held yesterday, Sunday, in Algiers, during which emphasis was placed on the national dimension and commitment that characterized the work of the writer, who documented the suffering of the Algerian people under French colonization.
This conference was organized by the National Center for Studies and Research on the Popular Resistance, the National Movement, and the Revolution of November 1, 1954 (CNERMN54), to mark the 64th anniversary of the martyrdom of Mouloud Feraoun, who was assassinated on March 15, 1962, alongside several of his companions, by the French Secret Army Organization (OAS).
The speakers unanimously highlighted that the assassination of Mouloud Feraoun underscores the national dimension of this committed teacher and intellectual, whose French-language writings served as a means to affirm his Algerian identity and fight against colonialism.
In this context, Ali Feraoun, the writer's son, emphasized the importance of his father's writings and contributions to the struggle against French colonization, indicating that his father "maintained secret and close contacts with the leaders of the Revolution in the historic wilaya III." The writer "also contributed, through his fictional texts, to shedding light on the sufferings and concerns of the Algerian people," he noted, adding that "archives prove the involvement of General Charles de Gaulle in his assassination as well as that of his companions."
For his part, Saidi Meziane, a professor at the Higher School of Teachers of Bouzareah (ENSB), discussed Mouloud Feraoun's educational journey, describing him as "one of the most prominent Algerian writers to have written in the language of the colonizer to express the suffering and tragedy of the Algerian people."
Meanwhile, the representative of the Ministry of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, Kheïra Meziti, indicated that several activities have been organized to commemorate the 64th anniversary of the martyrdom of Mouloud Feraoun and his companions across various museum institutions affiliated with the ministry.
The president of the Mouloud Feraoun Association, Nessah Mokrane, highlighted the symbolic significance of commemorating the memory of the writer Mouloud Feraoun and his companions, ensuring that younger generations learn about them and thereby "strengthen the spirit of identity and attachment to the national values for which the martyrs sacrificed themselves."
During this gathering, which was attended by representatives of several national bodies and institutions as well as members of the revolutionary family, the family of the martyr Mouloud Feraoun was honored.
