Participants at the 8th Symposium of the Algerian Gas Industry Association, which opened yesterday (Monday) in Oran, highlighted the growing role of green hydrogen in the Sonatrach Group's strategy, viewing it as a central element for supporting the energy transition and achieving sustainable development within the national industry.
During the workshop titled "Geopolitics and the Gas Market," speakers emphasized Sonatrach’s commitment to developing renewable energy and integrating green hydrogen as an energy solution for transport and storage. They consider this a strategic step to bolster Algeria’s competitiveness in international energy markets.
In this context, Faïza Ferradji, Business Development Project Manager at Sonatrach Group, stated that Algeria "has entered a phase of energy transition through the integration of green hydrogen into the energy system." She added that this resource constitutes a long-term energy option that can be exported to the European market.
She specified that Sonatrach is moving forward with the implementation of its ambitious green hydrogen projects. The group is leveraging vast available land areas, the national power grid, existing infrastructure, and significant solar and wind energy potential, thereby strengthening its position in the sustainable energy industry.
Ms. Ferradji also pointed out that gas demand in both domestic and international markets remains high despite geopolitical challenges. She stressed that Algeria possesses significant reserves, well-developed infrastructure, and recognized commercial expertise.
For their part, several Sonatrach Group executives highlighted Algeria’s advantages in the international gas market, notably its volume of reserves, competitive production costs, and extensive marketing experience. They affirmed that the country has all the necessary assets to expand its presence in the clean energy sector.
The symposium's program also featured workshops on "Hydrogen: Opportunities and Challenges," "Digital Transformation in the Gas Industry," and "Energy Transition and Decarbonization." Additionally, roundtables were held on "Green Hydrogen: Opportunities and Challenges" and "Digital Transformation: From Artificial Intelligence Ambition to Industrial Application."
Proceedings will continue on Tuesday with roundtable discussions focusing on "Innovation, Research and Development," "Human Resources as a Lever for Gas Industry Development," and "Energy and Gas Strategy in a World in Transition."
This two-day symposium brings together over 700 participants, including energy sector experts and stakeholders, alongside representatives from international companies, national institutions, and subsidiaries of the Sonatrach and Sonelgaz groups.
