The Minister of Finance, Abdelkrim Bouzred, began participating this Monday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in the proceedings of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Forum on Financing for Development Follow-up for the year 2026, held from April 20 to 24.

The forum was opened this Monday by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, and ECOSOC President Lok Bahadur Thapa. The leaders collectively agreed on the necessity of working to advance the outcomes of the "Seville Commitment," which was adopted by heads of state and government last June.

The opening session also saw the participation of Nigel Clarke, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and Paschal Donohoe, Managing Director and Senior Knowledge Officer of the World Bank Group. They reviewed the efforts of their respective organizations in supporting countries throughout the process of financing sustainable development projects.

At the start of the proceedings, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed provided a comprehensive presentation of the Secretary-General’s 2026 report on financing for sustainable development. She emphasized the urgent need to strengthen international efforts, particularly in light of global economic instability, which has led to increased developmental pressure on the poorest nations. She noted that high borrowing costs and declining employment opportunities, coinciding with complex geopolitical situations in the Middle East, threaten to reverse progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The general debate will continue until April 24, during which the Minister of Finance, Abdelkrim Bouzred, will deliver an address highlighting Algeria's national and international efforts in the field of financing for development.
