The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union held a meeting dedicated to the coordination mechanism of the African members of the UN Security Council (A3). The session featured a quarterly briefing reviewing the mechanism’s key activities and its ongoing efforts to strengthen and defend African positions within the UN body, thereby enhancing Africa's role and influence in international peace and security issues.
This meeting is the first coordination session between the Permanent Representatives of the "A3" group and the AU Peace and Security Council since the mechanism was institutionalized in August 2025 by the Council under the rotating Algerian presidency. This step followed recommendations from the High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa (Oran Process).
The briefing highlighted several priority issues, notably the necessity of maintaining the group's unity and cohesion as a fundamental condition for strengthening negotiating leverage. It also emphasized enhancing the role of African states in drafting Security Council resolutions concerning the continent to serve its interests, such as accelerating the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2719 and reforming the UN Security Council in accordance with the Common African Position.
In this context, members of the AU Peace and Security Council reaffirmed the "pivotal role of the A3 group as a strategic mechanism for coordination, consultation, and collective action through regular coordination meetings at the level of Permanent Representatives and experts." They also stressed the "importance of intensifying institutional coordination between Addis Ababa and New York to ensure consistency in positions and rapid response to developments within the Security Council."
In his intervention, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Algeria to the African Union, Mohamed Khaled, emphasized the "importance of unifying the African voice within the UN Security Council through continued effective coordination between the A3 group and the members of the AU Peace and Security Council." He commended the "tireless efforts made by the previous composition of this mechanism, including Algeria, to face international and regional challenges and defend the continent's interests."
Furthermore, he stressed the priority of consistency in African positions, the exchange of information between the Council and the A3 group, and the expansion of strategic partnerships with other regional blocs. He also called for "pushing forward the implementation of resolutions supporting African peace operations to address security challenges in Africa."
The meeting concluded with the formulation of a set of recommendations to be included in the communiqué issued on this matter.
