The President of the Republic of Angola, Mr. João Lourenço, visited the "Fouka 2" seawater desalination plant in the province of Tipaza on Tuesday. This visit is part of his ongoing state visit to Algeria, which began on Monday.

The visit to the plant, which was constructed using national expertise and companies, took place in the presence of the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab; the Minister of Water Resources, Lounas Bouzegza; the CEO of Sonatrach, Noureddine Daoudi; and the Wali of Tipaza, Mohamed Amine Benchaoulia.

In the facility's control room, President Lourenço received detailed explanations regarding the plant's operations and the stages of desalinated water production. The plant has a production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day and was inaugurated by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in February 2025.

In his address, the CEO of Sonatrach highlighted the significant strides Algeria has made in recent years to bolster its water security. He noted that Algeria has become the top producer of desalinated water in Africa, ranking second in both the Arab world and the Mediterranean region. By 2030, Algeria’s total desalination capacity is projected to reach 5.6 million cubic meters per day, up from the current 3.7 million.

Mr. Daoudi added that Algeria launched a new national program this year to build six additional desalination plants along its coastline, with a future total capacity of 1.8 million cubic meters per day.

The "Fouka 2" plant is part of a complementary desalination program that includes four other facilities. These plants, each with a daily capacity of 300,000 cubic meters, have entered service in the provinces of El Tarf (Koudiet Eddraouche), Boumerdes (Cap Djinet), Oran (Cap Blanc), and Bejaia (Tighremt-Toudja), bringing the total capacity of this program to 1.5 million cubic meters per day. This initiative aims to ensure water security and provide drinking water for citizens using national skills and modern technologies.
