Algeria-Angola: A Shared Will to Strengthen Historic Ties of Brotherhood, Solidarity, and Mutual Support

The state visit of the President of the Republic of Angola, Mr. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, to Algeria has materialized the shared will of both nations to strengthen their historic ties of brotherhood, solidarity, and mutual support, according to a joint communiqué issued at the conclusion of the visit.

The full text of the communiqué is as follows:

"At the invitation of His Excellency Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, His Excellency Mr. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola, conducted a state visit to Algeria from May 11 to 13, 2026.

His Excellency Mr. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço was accompanied by Her Excellency Ms. Ana Dias Lourenço, First Lady of the Republic of Angola, and a high-level delegation.

This visit materialized the shared will of the two leaders to strengthen the historic relations of brotherhood and solidarity between Algeria and Angola. It reflected their mutual commitment to Pan-African ideals and their ambition to promote beneficial cooperation for the development and integration of the continent, in line with the African Union's Agenda 2063.

The two Heads of State reaffirmed the depth of the historic bonds between the two peoples, forged through the common struggle against colonialism and for the liberation of Africa. They reiterated the exemplary and distinguished nature of bilateral relations based on trust, solidarity, and a convergence of views.

During the visit, President João Lourenço paid tribute to the martyrs of the Algerian Revolution at Maqam El Chahid and visited the Mujahid Museum. He also visited the Fouka 2 desalination plant in Tipaza, the Scientific and Technological Hub in Sidi Abdellah, the Great Mosque of Algiers, and the Central Supply Base of the 1st Military Region.

His Excellency President João Lourenço held a private meeting with His Excellency President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which was later expanded to include members of both delegations. He also held talks with the President of the People's National Assembly (APN) and the Prime Minister, and addressed both chambers of the Algerian Parliament.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune renewed his warm congratulations to the Angolan people on the 50th anniversary of Angola's independence, expressing appreciation for the posthumous honors granted to the late Presidents Houari Boumediene and Ahmed Ben Bella, as well as the late Colonel and former Ambassador Mokhtar Kerkeb in recognition of their contributions to the Angolan liberation struggle.

The two leaders discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation in strategic sectors, including hydrocarbons, agriculture, the pharmaceutical industry, renewable energy, infrastructure, digitalization, health, higher education, and vocational training. Algeria reaffirmed its readiness to support Angola's development efforts through human resource training and the exchange of expertise in economic diversification.

They emphasized the importance of institutional cooperation, notably the Bilateral Joint Commission, which will hold its next session in Luanda. They also welcomed the prospects of opening a direct air link between Algiers and Luanda and witnessed the signing of several legal cooperation agreements.

On regional and international levels, the two Heads of State praised the close coordination between their diplomacies. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune congratulated President João Lourenço on his successful AU chairmanship and his commitment to negotiated political solutions for African crises. They reaffirmed their commitment to 'African solutions to African problems' and rejected any foreign interference.

Both sides emphasized the need for African coordination against terrorism and violent extremism. In this regard, President João Lourenço praised the role of Algeria and the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune as the AU Champion for the fight against terrorism and extremism.

Regarding the issue of Western Sahara, the two Heads of State reaffirmed their commitment to the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination in accordance with UN and AU resolutions. They also expressed deep concern over the situation in the Middle East, reiterating their support for a just and lasting solution based on the establishment of an independent Palestinian State.

The two leaders hailed the UN General Assembly's historic resolution (March 25, 2026) regarding the enslaved Atlantic trade as a crime against humanity and called for just reparations for Africa.

The visit concluded with an exchange of high-level decorations. President João Lourenço expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality and extended an invitation to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to pay a state visit to Angola, which was accepted."
