Algeria and Russia Strengthen Partnership in Cultural Heritage Conservation and Restoration

Algeria and the Russian Federation signed a scientific and technical Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Moscou aimed at bolstering cooperation in the conservation and restoration of cultural property, according to a statement released this Wednesday by the the Ministry of Culture and Arts.

The agreement was concluded within the framework of strengthening bilateral relations and strategic partnership between the two nations. It took place on the sidelines of the 13th session of the Algerian-Russian Joint Intergovernmental Commission for Economic, Commercial, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation, held in Moscou from June 24 to 26.

The MoU was signed by Professeur Hamza Mohamed Chérif, Director of the National School of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Goods (ENCRBC) for the Algerian side, and Docteure Natalia Fedorovna Solovieva, Director of the Rescue Archaeology Center at the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, representing the Russian side. The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of Algeria to the Russian Federation.

According to the statement, this memorandum aims to "activate scientific and technical cooperation mechanisms" between the two countries. It primarily focuses on the exchange of field and academic expertise in the maintenance and restoration of historical monuments, as well as the development of joint research to protect cultural property.

The agreement also emphasizes technical cooperation in rescue archaeology and urgent excavations, while opening new horizons for training and skill development for students and researchers in this specialized field.

This step reflects the strategic vision of the the Ministry of Culture and Arts to elevate national cultural heritage and enhance the performance of its training institutions. By opening up to leading international expertise, Algeria seeks to ensure the protection of its identity and history according to the latest global scientific standards.
