The national road accident prevention awareness campaign for the summer season will be launched on Wednesday and will run until the end of August, the Ministry of the Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport indicated in a press release.
Organized by the National Delegation for Road Safety (DNSR), the campaign will run under the slogan "During the Holidays: My Safe Driving... Protects My Family," and will continue until August 31. According to the same source, this period sees a peak in traffic accidents, coinciding with the summer holiday season.
DNSR statistics report 7,430 traffic accidents across the national territory during the previous summer season, resulting in 1,131 deaths and 10,694 injuries. These figures represent a 5.09% increase in the number of accidents and a 6.43% increase in injuries, while the fatality rate recorded a 2.42% decrease, the ministry recalled.
The awareness campaign program includes local outreach and information activities targeting various categories of road users. It also features an awareness caravan that will tour six coastal wilayas: Tipaza, Algiers, Bejaïa, Skikda, Oran, and Tizi Ouzou.
The wilaya of Tipaza will host the campaign's official launch ceremony at Martyrs' Square (Place des Martyrs). This will feature open-house events on road safety starting at 10:00 AM, held under the patronage of the Wali of the wilaya and with the participation of all partners. These partners notably include representatives of active bodies in the field, such as the National Gendarmerie Command (GN), the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), and the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC), alongside civil society representatives.
At the local level, all wilaya road safety delegations have drawn up an awareness program tailored to the specificities of the road environment in each wilaya, the statement added.
This awareness campaign is being organized for the second consecutive year in partnership between the DNSR and Sonatrach, in implementation of the cooperation agreement concluded between the two parties.
