Activists and officials of the Socialist Forces Front (FFS) gathered this Tuesday at Ait-Ahmed village, in the wilaya of Tizi-Ouzou, to pay tribute to the memory of Moudjahid Hocine Ait Ahmed, who passed away on December 23, 2015.
In a statement to the press, the party's First National Secretary, Youcef Aouchiche, hailed the memory of "a pillar of the struggle for Algeria's independence, democracy, and human rights." He described him as a man whose "patriotism made his name inseparable from the history of Algeria and who, despite his passing a decade ago, remains present through his ideas."
Recalling the man's journey and stature since his engagement in the ranks of the national movement, Mr. Aouchiche indicated that a gathering will be organized by the FFS in January 2026 to pay tribute to him and discuss his career of over 70 years in service to Algeria.
Born in 1926 in Ain El Hammam (Tizi-Ouzou), Hocine Ait Ahmed joined the Algerian People's Party (PPA) in 1943. In 1947, along with other activists for the national cause, he founded the Special Organization (OS), whose first leader was Mohamed Belouizdad.
In 1955, he led the Algerian delegation to the Bandung Conference, and in 1956, he headed the office of the National Liberation Front (FLN) delegation in New York. He was arrested by French authorities in October 1956, along with Mohamed Boudiaf, Mohamed Khider, Ahmed Ben Bella, and Mostefa Lacheraf, on the plane taking them to Tunis where a Maghreb peace conference was scheduled to be held.
After independence, Hocine Ait Ahmed created the FFS in September 1963; the party operated clandestinely until it was officially recognized in 1989.
