The global media organization "PassBlue" has named the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, as the Diplomat of the Year 2025. He shares the title with Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), in recognition of his diplomatic efforts and prominent stances within the corridors of the UN organization.
This recognition reflects, once again, Algeria's increasing presence on the international stage and the growing role of its diplomacy in influencing UN debates, within an international context witnessing escalating calls to respect international law and protect human rights.
Amar Bendjama is considered one of the most prominent Algerian diplomats, having accumulated a long career in the diplomatic corps and held several high-ranking positions before his appointment as Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
During Algeria’s non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council, he distinguished himself with clear and frank stances in defense of just causes, foremost among them the Palestinian cause. His direct interventions within the Council earned him widespread attention and appreciation within UN circles.
His diplomatic activities also encompassed files related to peace and security on the African continent. He focused on supporting political pathways to settle conflicts, in line with the Algerian approach advocating for solutions stemming from within the continent, while reaffirming the rejection of foreign interventions that contribute to complicating crises rather than resolving them.
"PassBlue" is an independent digital news organization founded in 2011. Affiliated with the Institute for Nonprofit News, it specializes in covering and monitoring the activities of the United Nations.
