In a session held yesterday evening, Tuesday, the UN Security Council discussed the grave deterioration of the situation in Lebanon due to the Zionist military escalation.

In an address to the Security Council, Mr. Khaled Khiari, UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East and Europe, stated that the situation in Lebanon 'continues to deteriorate sharply' within the context of broader escalation in the region.

Khiari added that the Blue Line is witnessing heavy firing, alongside Zionist military strikes across various regions of Lebanon, and the reinforcement of the occupying forces' deployment deep into Lebanese territory.

He affirmed that the United Nations continues to call for recourse to diplomatic channels, while renewing the commitment to the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

Khiari conveyed a message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres during his recent visit to Lebanon, in which he affirmed that 'the Lebanese people did not choose this war; they were dragged into it,' calling for an end to the Zionist attacks on the region.

For his part, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, warned in his speech that civilians are paying a heavy price for the continued hostilities, while the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has suffered casualties.
