Algeria has been elected by acclamation to the position of Vice‑Chair of the Preparatory Committee for the United Nations Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Humanity, representing the African Group, during a meeting held at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The election took place during the first session of the Preparatory Committee, held from 19 to 30 January 2026 at UN Headquarters.

This choice is seen as a recognition of Algeria’s active role and its respected standing in international fora, particularly in the areas of promoting international justice, upholding international law, defending human rights and supporting just causes around the world.

The Committee is tasked with preparing the United Nations Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Humanity, scheduled to take place in 2028–2029.
