The Minister of Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Mr. Saïd Sayoud, presented on Monday before the members of the National People's Assembly (APN), the draft law determining the electoral constituencies and the number of seats to be filled in Parliament.

The draft law was presented during a plenary session chaired by the President of the Assembly, Mr. Brahim Boughali, in the presence of the Minister of Relations with Parliament, Ms. Nadjiba Djilali.

This draft law, whose provisions are based on "the increase in the number of electoral constituencies from 58 to 69, in addition to the electoral constituency of the national community established abroad," adapts the electoral map to the new territorial division.

The new territorial division also entails reviewing the number of seats to be filled at the APN, "by allocating one (1) seat for each bracket of 120,000 inhabitants, while guaranteeing a minimum of two (2) seats for each of the wilayas with a population of less than 200,000 inhabitants, instead of the current three (3) seats."

For the Council of the Nation, the draft law proposes adopting the population criterion for the election of two-thirds (2/3) of its members. Thus, the text provides for the allocation of one (1) seat for each electoral constituency with a population equal to or less than 250,000 inhabitants.
