Pope Leo XIV affirmed this Monday in Algiers that the Algerian people have never been defeated by hardships because they are deeply rooted in the values of solidarity, the acceptance of others, and a sense of community, praising their inherent hospitality and immense generosity.

In a speech delivered at the Cultural Center of Djamaâ El-Djazaïr, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, senior state officials, members of the government, representatives of national and official bodies, as well as representatives of civil society and the diplomatic corps accredited to Algeria, His Holiness the Pope explained that he came “full of longing to meet the noble Algerian people”. He noted that their “deep religious sense is the secret behind the culture of encounter and reconciliation in a world filled with conflict and misunderstanding”.

He highlighted on this occasion that he came “as a witness to the peace and hope for which the world intensely yearns, and which the Algerian people have always sought—a people never defeated by hardships because they are deeply rooted in the values of solidarity, the acceptance of others, and the community spirit woven by the daily lives of millions of humble and kind people. They are the strong ones, and they are the future; they are those who are not blinded by power or wealth, nor do they sacrifice the dignity of their fellow citizens for personal gain or the benefit of one group over another”.

In the same context, he mentioned that the Algerian people “have demonstrated immense generosity on numerous occasions”. This stance, as he stated, is manifested through “the deeply rooted hospitality, which stands as a fundamental social value”.
