On the second day of his official visit to Algeria at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Pope Leo XIV visited the Wilaya of Annaba, where he praised humanitarian initiatives that uphold the values of coexistence and solidarity.

Deeply moved by this historic trip to former Hippo, the residents of Annaba viewed the visit as an "exceptional event and an opportunity to highlight Algeria's image as a land of tolerance, dialogue, and coexistence between religions and civilizations."

Citizens gathered from the early hours of the morning to follow the stages of the papal visit, creating a scene that reflected the widespread excitement surrounding this unprecedented event.

Near St. Augustine’s Basilica, many visitors stopped to take photographs of the site, while others in the Old City followed Pope Leo XIV's route, illustrating the commitment of Annaba's citizens to the success of an event with profound religious and cultural dimensions.

The Sovereign Pontiff received an official welcome from the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, as well as from the civil and military authorities of the Wilaya of Annaba.

Pope Leo XIV visited the care home for the elderly at St. Augustine’s Basilica, where he was warmly received by the facility’s administrators. They took the opportunity to express their gratitude to the Algerian people for their generosity and support, which enables them to fulfill their mission for the residents.

In a speech delivered on this occasion, Pope Leo XIV expressed his joy at being in a place that serves as a "symbol of love, solidarity, and brotherhood," noting that his presence there "embodies the values of hope, despite the wars and injustices facing the world." He also praised such humanitarian and solidarity initiatives for "reflecting the true meaning of human coexistence."

At the conclusion of the visit, the staff and residents of the care home at St. Augustine’s Basilica presented Pope Leo XIV with symbolic gifts.

Accompanied by the Minister of Culture and Arts, Ms. Malika Bendouda, the honored guest of Algeria began his morning visit to Annaba by traveling to the Hippo archaeological site, home to the historic Basilica of Peace.

There, the Sovereign Pontiff received comprehensive explanations regarding the site, laid a wreath of flowers, and planted an olive branch from St. Augustine’s tree, symbolizing universal peace.

Pope Leo XIV also listened to musical excerpts of authentic Algerian heritage, conveying messages of love and coexistence. During a Mass he presided over at St. Augustine’s Basilica, he once again called for following "the paths of justice and communion," before offering his "very special" thanks to the Algerian authorities for the welcome and hospitality extended to him.
