An American media outlet highlighted Algeria's pioneering role in promoting interfaith dialogue, peace, and rapprochement between peoples, in addition to its contribution to achieving regional and international stability.

In an analysis published by an American media outlet and think tank, former Albanian diplomat Arben Cici described the historic visit of Pope Leo XIV to Algeria as an 'inspiring moment with strong symbolic significance' in the context of contemporary interfaith relations, noting the extensive international media coverage this visit received.

In this regard, the speaker emphasized that “the images of the Pope receiving a warm welcome in Algiers have resonated across the globe, allowing Algeria’s voice to be heard as a model of tolerance and stability at a time when the world is in dire need of such examples.”

He further stated that this historic visit has “significantly highlighted Algeria’s prominent role as a land of authentic hospitality and inherited wisdom, drawing its roots from the legacy of Saint Augustine and a wise leadership that unites religions, cultures, and continents.”

Within the current geopolitical context, this “blessed” visit—the first by the Pope to Algeria—reaffirms Algeria's substantial contribution to the stability of the Maghreb, Africa, the Islamic world, and the MENA region. It also highlights energy partnerships that bolster Europe's security and open promising horizons for cooperation in the Mediterranean and the Balkans, according to the same source, which also emphasized Algeria's “pioneering role on the international stage.”

In this regard, the American media outlet noted that the selection of Algeria as the first stop in the Pope's African tour “was no coincidence.” It added that he intentionally began his historic journey to Africa from Algeria, a “deliberate and profound choice carrying significant spiritual, historical, and geopolitical implications.” This highlights Algeria's role as “a nation that has long defended the principles of non-interference, the right to self-determination, and reconciliation.”

The former Albanian Ambassador to Denmark, Croatia, and Russia highlighted the messages of peace, tolerance, and coexistence championed by Algeria. He explained that “interfaith dialogue is built upon mutual respect and the recognition of the other.”

Furthermore, Mr. Cici, currently a professor of international relations at the Mediterranean University of Albania, touched upon the warm welcome the Pope received from the Algerian authorities and society. He noted that the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, “personally received the Pope at Houari Boumediene International Airport.”

Moreover, “figures and actors from civil society, as well as Algerian citizens, showed great enthusiasm during this visit, reflecting the culture of tolerance and deep brotherhood that characterizes the country,” he said.

In conclusion, the former diplomat considered that the Pope’s visit “transcended the protocol framework to be an event promising hope, reflecting Algeria’s contribution to promoting dialogue, peace, and stability at both the regional and international levels.”
