The Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Mr. Wassim Kouidri, discussed in Algiers with the Director General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Mr. Jean Kaseya, ways to strengthen cooperation in developing the pharmaceutical and vaccine industry in Africa, supporting health security on the continent.

A statement from the ministry explained that the meeting, which took place yesterday, Monday, addressed the capabilities Algeria possesses in the pharmaceutical industry and the progress achieved in developing local medicine production. It also covered prospects for joint cooperation in building African capacities for producing medicines and vaccines, exchanging expertise, and supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening public health systems.

Furthermore, both sides reviewed the mechanisms for implementing the outcomes of the "Algiers Declaration" issued by the African Ministerial Conference on local production of medicines and other health technologies, which Algiers hosted in November 2025, by developing regional industrial hubs, promoting local manufacturing, and encouraging technology transfer, thereby contributing to building an integrated and sustainable African pharmaceutical production ecosystem.

According to the statement, both parties emphasized the importance of adopting pooled procurement mechanisms for medicines and vaccines as a means to strengthen the negotiating power of African countries, improve supply chain efficiency, and expand fair and equitable access to essential pharmaceutical products, thereby supporting health sovereignty across the African continent.
