Algeria received on Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland, the official certificate of recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO) for the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem. This distinction comes in appreciation of the nation's continuous efforts in combating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and enhancing public health, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health.

The statement detailed that the WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, presented the official certificate to Algeria, represented by the Minister of Health, Mr. Mohamed Seddik Aït Messouedane, at the organization's headquarters.

This international milestone marks a major step in the development of the national health system. It reflects Algeria's commitment to implementing international health standards and strengthening prevention and care programs across all provinces, leading to the successful eradication of trachoma as a public health issue.

As highlighted in the statement, this UN recognition embodies the resources mobilized by the Algerian State through various health structures and personnel to upgrade public health services and improve care and prevention indicators. This achievement aligns with sustainable health development goals and bolsters Algeria's regional and international standing in public health.

Minister Aït Messouedane is currently participating in the 79th session of the World Health Assembly, held in Geneva from May 18 to 23 under the theme "Redefining Global Health: A Shared Responsibility." The session is dedicated to discussing current health priorities and the transformations necessary to maintain global health balance.
