The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, received on Monday morning the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, who is visiting Algeria as part of a regional tour, according to a ministry statement.

According to the communiqué, this meeting provided an opportunity to "review efforts aimed at advancing the negotiation process on the Western Sahara issue with a view to reaching a political solution acceptable to both parties to the conflict—the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front—in accordance with the United Nations Charter and guaranteeing the Sahrawi people their right to self-determination."

On this occasion, Mr. Attaf reaffirmed "Algeria’s support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, and his Personal Envoy," emphasizing "the importance of engaging in negotiations without preconditions as well as the need to create the optimal conditions allowing direct negotiations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front to lead to a just, lasting, and final solution to the Western Sahara issue."

The Minister also insisted on the "central role" played by MINURSO in regional stability, reaffirming "Algeria's steadfast position in favor of respecting international legality resolutions related to the Western Sahara issue and its treatment as a matter of decolonization."
