UN: Staffan de Mistura Discusses Conflict Resolution in Occupied Territories With Sahrawi Authorities

CHAHID EL-HAFED (Sahrawi Refugee Camps) – The Sahrawi Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beisat, held talks on Monday with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, regarding the UN settlement process for the Western Sahara conflict and efforts to achieve a just, honest, and transparent solution.

According to the Sahrawi Press Service (SPS), the meeting took place in the presence of the Representative of the Polisario Front to the UN and Coordinator with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Sidi Mohamed Omar, and the Chief of Staff to the Presidency of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), Mohamed Mouloud Mohamed, as part of the "official" and "meticulous" monitoring of negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations.

In a statement to the press, Mr. Beisat explained that the discussions with the UN envoy focused on the efforts made by the UN to reach a "just, honest, and transparent" solution capable of guaranteeing the Sahrawi people their inalienable right to self-determination and independence, in accordance with international law and United Nations resolutions.

This meeting was held as part of a regional tour initiated on Sunday by the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General.

Mr. de Mistura is expected to hold a series of meetings with SADR authorities, as well as sessions with members of the Advisory Council and representatives of Sahrawi organizations focused on women's, youth, and human rights issues. These meetings are part of the actions undertaken by the United Nations toward a settlement of the conflict in the occupied territories.
